The village of Blackboys lies inland from the South Downs near Ashdown Forest, within Framfield parish and between Heathfield and Uckfield. It commands stunning views to the north across the valley. The Blackboys Inn, part of which dates from the 1500s, was a stop-off point for charcoal transporters, so the village (and pub’s) name derives from the lads’ colour when they emerged from the wood after burning charcoal.
