NEW DEVELOPMENT ยท BY HELGI

Chalk House, Westgate-on-Sea

36 one and two bedroom apartments within three restored Victorian villas on Sea Road, a few minutes’ walk from the Blue Flag beach at St Mildred’s Bay.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR SEA ROAD

Victorian villas, restored as homes once again

Built between 1880 and 1890 in the Queen Anne Revival style, the villas at 39, 41 and 43 Sea Road were part of Westgate-on-Sea’s original Victorian resort. After decades as care homes, they have been carefully converted into 36 apartments.

Elevations have been preserved and period proportions reinstated, with bay windows, cornicing and generous ceiling heights retained wherever possible. The conversion was led by Canterbury practice Clague Architects, with interiors by design studio Ademchic.

Each apartment looks over either the restored grounds or the Sea Road frontage towards the bay.

Bedrooms

Generous skirting, cornicing and herringbone style flooring reinstate proportion and warmth. The palette draws on the coastline, with sage greens, soft greys and golden accents, and the principal bedroom has a built in wardrobe.

Bathrooms

Striped tiling nods to the bathing suits once worn by Victorian swimmers at St Mildredโ€™s Bay. Wall hung WCs with concealed cisterns, brushed brass fittings and electric towel rails complete a playful but refined finish.

LIFE BY THE COAST

Living in Westgate-on-Sea

Westgate-on-Sea was laid out in the late 1860s as a quiet, private resort for London families, set apart from livelier Margate next door. It keeps that character today, with two sandy bays, a Blue Flag beach and a canopied Victorian parade of independent shops and cafés.

The station is within walking distance, with direct Southeastern trains to London St Pancras International in as little as 1 hour 36 minutes.
