Hastings

Hastings is a seaside town located on the south coast of England, which is well known for the 1066 battle which was fought on the nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. This popular coastal town offers something for everyone where modern life merges with the traditional.

Hastings The History

The history

Rich in culture and history, the picturesque seaside town of Hastings has a huge amount to offer. Of course, the place is well known for its famous battle of 1066, and although the Battle of Hastings actually took place a few miles north, traces of its historical significance remain today. However, the history of Hastings goes way beyond 1066. Once part of Cinque Ports, a medieval alliance of coastal towns, in Victorian times it was prosperous seaside resort. The timeless Old Town still welcomes large numbers of visitors today, with an array of quirky shops and atmospheric pubs.

Today, Hastings remains a working fishing port. But its relaxed seaside vibe and proximity to London make it a hotspot for those looking for a picturesque bolthole which is still within commuting distance of the capital.

If you want a seaside retreat without the price tag of popular neighbours Brighton and Hove, Hastings should definitely be on your radar.

If you’re coming to Hastings to enjoy living by the seaside, you won’t be disappointed, with the beach offering a dramatic mix of sand, shingle and soaring cliffs.

There is an abundance of parks and open spaces throughout the town, with the most popular and largest being Alexandra Park. This offers beautifully maintained gardens, wide open spaces, tennis courts, a bandstand, a café and even a miniature railway.

When it comes to dining, there’s far more to this seaside town than fish and chips (although the classic dish is certainly worth trying!), with a huge selection of restaurants serving up everything from steak to Thai cuisine.

Hastings has a modern town centre and an indoor shopping mall with more than 50 shops and a large car park. In addition, you’ll find a wide variety of independent stores within the town centre and Old Town.
